Death:OK is a day of inspiration, information & connection, scheduled for October 17, 2015 in Portland, Oregon. The mission of our event is to help build a community where we reconnect to life and death and to each other, reducing the silence, fear, and isolation that too often surround the topic of death.
In the spring of 2013, Portland held its first Death Café – a participant-generated conversation format designed to help people make the most of their (finite) lives by increasing awareness of death. Since then, each PDX Death Café has had a long waiting list.
In response to this groundswell of interest, a group of volunteers met in fall, 2013 to ask: what next?
Soon we began imagining a full-day event featuring keynotes, workshops, performance art, and more. During the summer of 2014 more than 200 people provided input through a planning survey.
By 2014, we’d formed a steering committee and were well on our way to finalizing a date, (October 17, 2015), and a place – the beautiful campus of Reed College in southeast Portland.
