For many people, estate planning means signing a Will and putting it in a drawer where no one sees it until you die. But there’s a better way to plan your estate. This session will review the basic documents of estate planning (Wills, Revocable Trusts, Powers of Attorneys and Advance Directives) but will focus mostly on the benefits of communicating your wishes to your family prior to your death. By holding a family meeting or otherwise discussing your estate planning wishes with all of your family members, you can prevent much of the conflict that arises within the family after death. Harmony and continuity of relationships should be just as important as tangible assets and money when it comes to defining your legacy.

Melanie is a partner with the law firm of Fitzwater Meyer Hollis & Marmion, LLP.  Her estate planning practice specializes in working with families who have complex issues such as special needs, blended family, or estate/gift tax concerns. She also enjoys estate administration and helping people organize and manage the distribution of assets when a friend or a family member has passed away.
